Reading: Things are about to get SUPER exciting in reading as our new unit focuses on teaching Reader Super Powers! This unit brings our very own super hero, Reader-Man, who happens to have his very own theme song! In this unit we will be learning all sorts of reading super powers to help us begin to read conventionally in leveled books. Students will move to reading texts they have helped create in class as well as reading books at their own level that they select themselves from our classroom library. Our super powers this week will focus a lot on Pointer Power, or pointing one time to each word as we read. This helps students match their spoken words to print, monitor for letter sounds, and notice and use sight words. Oh, by the way, Super Readers will get Super Pointers (aka light up finger flashlights) to help them do this work. See, we told you this was going to be exciting! Stay tuned for pics!
Writing: Writing will take a new turn as well this week. We will be shifting from information writing to writing true stories. This is a type of writing we tried out earlier in the school year and it will be exciting for the students to get back to as they all have MANY stories to tell. This week we will warm up by telling and writing a few class stories together. The oral story telling component is just as important as the writing as we begin this unit, we want students to be able to tell their stories part by part first and then get them down on paper. This week on top of story telling, we will focus on stretching and spelling words the best we can and sketching pictures that are easy for others to "read."
Take a peek at these proud writers toasting their accomplishments at Friday's writing celebration!
Math: We will continue to really focus on addition and subtraction equations and the many ways we can see, solve and draw them. We will be introduced to a new math tool called a break apart stick that will be used to break apart groups of objects to see the partners that join together to create that number. We will also be working more on fluency with +1 and -1 equations as we illustrate and write equations to go along with addition and subtraction poems we learned last week.
Our math centers will be:
- Making a +1 poem book
- Making a -1 poem book
- Using break apart sticks and cubes to see partners of numbers and write equations
- Playing a game with +1 and -1 dice
Science: We will examine various types of fur this week and learn how it protects animals from both weather and predators. Did you know that porcupine quills are considered a type of fur? We will be making our own porcupines later this week. Watch out!
Word Work: We will continue to focus on the following sight words: see, in, you, big, little
Here is a list of all the sight words we have learned so far this year. We will add to this list weekly as we learn more!
