Weekly News November 2-6

We hope everyone had an eventful and (mostly) dry Halloween weekend!
The kids had a blast at our school celebration on Friday.  We loved reading by flashlights with second grade buddies and also played the role of the "tall black hat" in the story of The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything.  There were lots of laughs while we were learning the "Flying Purple People Eater" dance from Mrs. Stratton, too!

A new month brings all sorts of updates:

Reading:  We will spend a few days this week continuing to focus on building strong partnerships, building off of the goal setting we did last week.  As we move towards the end of this unit later this week, students will choose a favorite "old favorite" that they will really focus on bringing to life for our unit celebration.  We will be creating character puppets and setting to assist in this work.  If you have a some extra caps (baseball or snap brim would be great) around your home, we would love to borrow them for the next 2 weeks to as a prop for Caps for Sale.

Writing:  We will learn to write about science topics in different ways this week.  We have been exploring different types of books that teach and are excited to try things other authors have tried.  We will push ourselves to write: list books, pattern books, topic books, and also question/answer books. We will also take time to make sure our writing is easy to read by really trying hard to leave spaces between words and even start to use some punctuation.

Math:  We are continuing to focus on the equal and not equal signs and how to use them appropriately.  We will also working with a counting mat to notice that as numbers grow sequentially what we are doing is adding 1.  We will explore and discuss number order and even try to write some +1 equations (5=4+1).  Additionally we will be looking at the attributes of a triangle and learning some position words: above, below, beside, behind and in front of.
Our math centers this week will be:
  • Reviewing addition and subtraction by telling stories about pictures
  • Creating a book using position words
  • Playing a card game to practice recognizing numerals and quantities as equal or not equal
  • Making our own 1-10 counting mat

Social Studies: We are wrapping up our school study this week by creating a map of our school.  We will do a walk-through and take pictures of the spaces in our school that we will create for our map, students will choose which area they want to work on, and finally we will put all of our pieces together into a GIANT map.   Here a few pictures of the school spaces students built last week in centers.

Word Work: We will spend one more week on our sight words: it, me, here, can, we.  Keep searching for these in books you read at home or invite your child to practice writing these words or spelling them aloud.  We will also begin our differentiated word sorts this week to practice early spelling and reading skills at their own level.  We will share more about this with you at conferences next week!

Help spread the word!
