Weekly News November 9-13

This will be a fun week of celebrations in Kindergarten!  We will wrap up and celebrate reading and writing units and will also celebrate sharing good news with you at conferences.  We are really looking forward to sharing the wonderful things your son or daughter has been doing in Kindergarten!

Upcoming Dates:
 Nov. 10th and 12th: Parent/Teacher Conferences
Nov. 16th: 1/2 day 11:30 dismissal
Nov. 25th-27th: No School Thanksgiving Break

Reading: Students have selected a favorite old favorite story book that they are working to bring to life in a small group.  We are studying what storytellers do to bring stories to life as well as creating puppets and settings to assist us in this work.  We will celebrate our story telling work on Thursday and Friday by having a movie premiere, where we watch a video of each student telling a story and then our groups will also perform their book for the class.

Writing: We will be using all we have learned about informational writing this week to revise, edit and publish a favorite piece of writing.  The boys and girls will look carefully at their writing and make sure it is clear and readable to those reading it and teaches everything they would like it.  To help us with this we will be using both editing and revising checklist.  They are very excited to be able to display their best writing for the school to see at the end of the week.

Math:  We will continue to work with the counting mat this week as we explore the operations of +1 and -1.  We will look at how numbers increase and decrease by 1 as we count forward or backward and will work to write equations that reflect this.  We will learn two poems that will help us to become more automatic in solving +1 and -1 equations.  We will also work to identify and create hexagons.  Our math centers will be:
  • creating shapes with various materials and using and app on the iPad
  • using math chips to tell and solve subtraction equations
  • working with a 5 frame and dice to master partners of (numbers that work together to make) 5
  • playing a card game called "Garbage" to practice number order and look for structure on a 10 frame

Science: We will begin our first Science unit this year: Fur, Feathers, Skin, and Scales.  In this unit we will learn about various animal body coverings and the purpose of each.  This week we will build some background knowledge on the different types of body coverings and then begin by learning about and examining our skin.  We will use magnifying glasses to look closely at our skin and our fingerprints!

Word Work: We will be focusing on 5 new sight words this week: see, in, you, big, little
